BIRTHDAYS

I find that, like many men, I'm not particularly keen on celebrating my birthday. It's not because I'm fretting over getting older. Rather, I'm uncomfortable with being the center of attention and I prefer not to feel needy or burdensome to others. In my conversations with other men, I've found that many share this sentiment—they tolerate celebrations mainly to please others. I've gone through the motions myself, even when my wife organized surprise birthday parties for me during the early years of our relationship.

However, I've begun to realize that this mindset is somewhat irrational. There's no valid reason why we shouldn't set aside one day each year to celebrate ourselves and allow our loved ones to celebrate us in return. We can momentarily let go of our stoic facades, share laughter, smiles, and bask in their affection. After all, we dedicate so much of our time supporting our loved ones throughout the year, so why not take one short day to be celebrated, to revel in joy, and to immerse ourselves in the love that surrounds us.

So, on your next birthday, consider allowing yourself to do just that. Recognize that you are deserving of love and happiness.
